If you're new to M-Power or have never heard how it all started, I wanted to share a little backstory behind how we got here.
April 4th marks 9 years since I took a leap of faith and opened M-Power at just 22 years old. Every year around this time feels like my own version of a New Year's reset — a time to reflect on how far we've come, what worked, what didn't, and where we're headed next. It's also become one of my favorite traditions: giving back to our clients through our anniversary sales.
Where It All Started
When I started this Lee's Summit salon, I had no idea what I was doing. But I had passion, a vision, and the determination to figure it out along the way.
We began in a small 836-square-foot space offering just a few services. In those early years, I was also serving tables every weekend while building the business during the week — doing whatever it took to keep things going. Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful for that time, especially for the discipline it taught me to save. That "emergency fund" is ultimately what helped us survive COVID.
Surviving and Growing
Like many small businesses, that season was one of the hardest. We were shut down, still responsible for rent and bills, and in the middle of planning our expansion. It would have been easy to walk away, but that was never an option in my mind. Thanks to our loyal clients and an incredible team, we came back stronger.
In 2021, we expanded into the space we're in today. That's when we added hair services, injections, and began hosting spa parties — which have quickly become one of our favorite parts of what we do. There is something so special about being part of your birthdays and celebrations.
Lessons Along the Way
Of course, growth hasn't come without challenges. I learned quickly that not every hire is the right fit, and that building the right team matters more than anything. Over the years, I've come to understand that success isn't something you build alone — it comes from having people around you who truly believe in the vision.
Through every high and low, every mistake and lesson, one thing has remained constant: our clients. Seeing familiar faces who have been with us since the very beginning means more than I can put into words.
Somehow, we've also become known as a one-stop beauty shop — and fun fact, brow waxes have been our number one service for the past three years!
Nine Years and Counting
As we head into another year, our focus is continuing to grow the right way — bringing in a nail tech and having a consistent injector available each week — while staying true to what matters most: quality over quantity.
Owning a business isn't always glamorous. It's challenging, unpredictable, and constantly pushes you. But it's also incredibly rewarding.
And I wouldn't trade it for anything.
